Writing
After my trip to the Dominican Republic, I wrote an essay reflecting on my experience, and expanding upon the differences between Public Health and medicine. As a result of my paper, I was rewarded with an Honors Fellowship in Public Health and Medicine.
Due to my vast interest in medicine, I have several pieces of work that I have submitted to fellowships, programs, and the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Some of the essays I have written are: Ebola in Sierra Leone, The Importance of Public Health vs Medicine Throughout the World, SDG 3 Indicators, NGO's in the medical field, and The Spanish Flu.
I attended a program for Health and Medicine at Duke University in the summer of 2023. Here, I confired my love for medicine whether it was dissections of hearts, brains, and eyes or learning about viruses. The most pivotal thing I learned in this program was how to suture and this has made me really excited to hopefully become a future surgeon. After this program, I also took a medical college course parallel to the curriculum and finished overall with an A.
I applied for the UCI Summer Surgical Program in my junior year, and I attended the summer before my senior year. Each morning, we would have a talk with a surgeon- a different surgeon and specialty each day- who would tell us about their path to their job and also some insight on their current lifestyle as a surgeon. or doctor. We would also spend each day learning surgical skills, for example, 5 suturing techniques, knot tying, laparoscopy, cytocopy, ultrasound, dissection, intubation, IV placement, and lumbar puncture placement. Best of al, we were given the opportunity to observe a surgery each morning in the OR with the surgeon. He would explain what he was doing and even show us things while he was working. Because of this program, I was able to affirm my affinity for surgery and see my future more clearly.
Main Clubs/ Extracurriculars
I have been playing soccer since I was 8 years old. Now in high school, I am on the Varsity team and have been a starter since Freshman year. I love sports and getting to work with a team, which is why I chose to stick with soccer alongside my main sport, field hockey.
I am the CoHead of TEDx Santa Catalina School. As per our mission, "The program is designed to give communities, organizations, and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level." In this club, we find speakers to come and talk about our chosen theme, this year's being "Creating Connections" which we chose to inspire students to come to terms with their true potential after high school and see the vast pathways for prosperity and self-growth.
My sister and I are the founding members of Folds of Honor, a school club that raises money for disabled veterans’ families. We created this club in honor of my dad, his brothers, and my grandfather who each served in the military for numerous years. On veterans day, my sister and I spoke to the entire school about our family's history in regards to the military, and we explained what this holiday means to us and other veteran families.
I have played varsity field hockey for all four years here at Santa Catalina School. I took up the position of goalie my freshman year and have stuck with it ever since. In my junior year, I was awarded 2nd team all league and in my senior year, I was awarded 1st team all league as well as goalie of the year throughout the league. I plan to continue field hockey at the club level wherever I attend college because it has been one of my favorite activities to do after school to create connections with others while keeping up my fitness.
